Last week I was lucky enough to go on a tour of the East Wing of Buckingham Palace where we got to see the famous balcony from the inside. On the way we passed a painting called “God Save the Queen” by John Charlton depicting the scene outside St Paul’s Cathedral celebrating Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897.
On the steps in the middle with his back to us but discernible by the red stripe down his back, is Eltham Choral Society’s very first conductor, Sir George Martin, conducting his own Te Deum written for the occasion.
